Birmingham’s connection to Black music has always been prolific - From the emergence of Reggae and Ska to the fusion of Caribbean sounds with British punk in the 1970s - 0121 has been a melting pot of musical influences. Its vibrant club scene has played a pivotal role in promoting genres such as Jungle, Drum and Bass, UK Garage, and Grime, providing platforms for emerging Black artists to showcase their talents and push cultural boundaries.  

During this panel discussion, we watch and discuss the profound impact of Birmingham's Black musical legacy. 

Celebrating the profound impact of Birmingham's Black musical legacy with Punch Records founder Ammo Talwar, writer and poet Casey Bailey, film maker Daniel Alexander and artists Dapz On The Map and Roxxxan.

This talk is part of a day of events in The British Library on Sunday 2 June. Ticket holders for 0121 – Birmingham’s Black Music Legacy (4.30 – 5.30pm) can arrive early at no extra cost for A Tribute to Sonny Roberts (1.30-2.30pm) and The Pioneers: Trailblazers of British Reggae (3 - 4.15pm).

Outside on the Piazza, Lin Kam Art hosts a free afternoon celebrating sound system culture with BASS TONE REGENERATION, Original Sounds Collective, LIGWA sound system, talks, workshops and much more.

The new exhibition Beyond the Bassline: 500 Years of Black British Music (26 April – 26 August) will also be open on the day. Ticket purchase required.

Ammo Talwar MBE is Currently the chair of UK Music’s Diversity Taskforce and the founder of Birmingham based music and arts agency Punch Records, which has played a significant role in promoting diversity and supporting emerging artists from within the city.

Casey Bailey, a Birmingham native, is an award-winning writer, performer, and educator, notably serving as the Birmingham Poet Laureate from 2020 to 2022. Some of his works include the poetry collections "Please Do Not Touch" and the co-authored exploration of Birmingham's Grime and Hip Hop scene, "Legacy." 

Dapz On The Map stands tall as one of Birmingham's most prominent performers, embodying the essence of the city's vibrant music scene and contributing significantly to the evolution of grime music. As a skilled MC and singer, he represents the next generation of talent in the grime genre, infusing his music with raw energy, sharp lyricism, and authentic storytelling.

Roxxxan, originating from the vibrant city of Birmingham, emerges as a multifaceted talent, showcasing prowess as a rapper, model, and presenter. Within the realm of music, her artistry transcends boundaries, with each verse delivering a potent blend of sharp lyricism and unapologetic authenticity.

Daniel Alexander is an award-winning director and BAFTA Connect filmmaker based in Birmingham. He works in television, narrative film and commercials. Beyond his impressive body of work, Alexander's impact extends to his local community and the wider industry, where he actively mentors aspiring filmmakers and advocates for diversity and representation.
