Dr John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s. His satirical and humorous verse, delivered in a unique rapid-fire performance style, made him the best loved and most important performance poet of this generation.
He is as vital now as in his 70's heyday, with John's new critically acclaimed poetry book, The Luckiest Guy Alive, having just been released Worldwide on Picador / Macmillan.
It’s been an spellbinding journey for Dr Clarke, in 1978 JCC signed a major world album deal with Epic Records. Those four albums recorded with the Invisible Girls and produced by the legendary Martin Hannett, are acknowledged as masterpieces. Since then his career has spanned cultures, audiences, art forms and continents.
What of John in the 21st century?
Today, JCC is as relevant and vibrant as ever and his influence just as visible on today’s pop culture.
He is a key orator of British society.
He headlined The Poetry Olympics at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall.
His influence can be heard in his recent collaborations with The Arctic Monkeys and Plan B, meaning John has been involved in 2 global number 1 albums in the last few years.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in July 2013 by the University Of Salford.
He is studied by college and university students throughout the world, all ensuring that he will be forever ingrained in the psyche of the world’s youth.
His own career spanning Box set Anthologia was released on Sony in late 2015 to huge critical acclaim.
Music recently called him “One of the most important artists ever.”
His collection of poems ‘10 years In An Open Necked Shirt’, is the best selling modern-day poetry book of all time.
Aside from his trademark ‘look’ continuing to resonate with fashionistas young and old, and his poetry included on national curriculum syllabus, his effect on modern music is huge.
His latest show, touring across the world, is a mix of classic verse, never to have been heard extraordinary new material, hilarious ponderings on modern life, good honest gags, riffs and chat - a chance to witness a living legend at the top of this game. He’s not going anywhere. Catch him live soon…
